Rita Ora promises ‘amazing outfits... and some English humour’ as host of MTV EMAs

LOS ANGELES — Rita Ora will host this year’s MTV EMAs from London, promising to bring “a lot of glamour, a lot of amazing outfits, and definitely some English humour” to the proceedings. The awards travel around Europe; this year’s event will be held Nov 12 in the SSE Arena in Wembley, London.

Kosovo-born Ora grew up in the British capital and has been nominated eight times at the EMAs over the years in categories including Best Video, Best Look and Best UK Artist. In addition to hosting the awards ceremony, she will perform her new single and, possibly, Lonely Together, the track she made with Avicii.

“To host it is really important for me, seeing as I grew up in Britain. I just really want to have fun with it and enjoy every moment,” Ora told Variety. “Every year I’d watch it, and everything was so shocking and amazing and live and had such a great impact. It really had an influence on my generation growing up.”

She added that it’s a good moment for the EMAs to come to the UK. “I really want to represent Britain on the night because it’s at Wembley, and there are so many amazing British artists recently that have been dominating the charts, and it’s been such a great year for us musically.”

Ora will release her second album next year after her breakout debut, Ora. Outside of music she has been a coach on the British edition of The Voice and judge on The X Factor. She has also hosted America’s Next Top Model on MTV’s sister net VH1. On the big screen she has been in such films as Fast And Furious 6 and Southpaw.

Ora grew up close to the Grenfell Tower high-rise apartment building in London, where scores of residents were killed by a fast-moving electrical fire earlier this year. The disaster shook many in the British capital, which has also been hit by three terrorist attacks this year.

“Especially now, we’re all looking for some form of hope because there have been some tragedies in London,” Ora said. “With this event I really want to try my hardest to bring joy back.”

“Rita is a multi-talented star who’s been an MTV core artist for over half of a decade,” said Bruce Gillmer, head of music and music talent, Global Entertainment Group, Viacom. “She’s the perfect hometown hero to lead the 2017 MTV EMAs.”

Public voting opens for the EMAs next week, and the acts will be announced in the next few weeks. VARIETY.COM/REUTERS
