Few cars are all things to all people, but then again, most cars aren’t the Kia Niro. It has the practicality of a crossover, the fuel economy of a hybrid and enough built-in tech to appeal to everyone’s inner geek.
Those are pretty impressive credentials for any form of family transport, but if you’re still not convinced, here are five more reasons why the Kia Niro is a smarter crossover.
1. WORLD-CLASS SUSTAINABILITY
The Niro is Kia’s first dedicated hybrid, which means it’s been designed from the ground up to maximise fuel efficiency. Just how efficient is it? World-beatingly so.
Last December, driving across the United States from coast to coast, the Niro set a Guinness World Record for the lowest fuel consumption for hybrid cars, with a figure of 76.6 miles per gallon (32.6km/litre).
2. HYBRID HOPE
Singapore’s start-stop driving conditions play to the strengths of the Niro’s parallel hybrid system, which stores power under braking and gets the car moving again without using fuel or generating emissions.
The car’s declared fuel consumption in Singapore is 26.3km/litre, no mean feat considering the start-stop driving conditions that are common in urbanised environments like Singapore’s. Assuming an average annual mileage of 20,000km, this works out to a fuel bill of just S$1,800 a year if you’re using 98-octane petrol.
3. CLEVER COMFORT
Some hybrids have all the styling smarts of a misshapen cardboard box, but not the Kia Niro, whose fuel-saving goodness is wrapped in a stylish package.
The Niro is as roomy and comfy on the inside as it is stylish on the outside, so it’ll handle anything you and your family can throw at it – and in it. Its 60:40 split rear seats can be folded flat (picture), offering up to 1,425 litres of cargo space, and there’s plenty of headroom and legroom for passengers to stretch out in comfort.
At the heart of the Niro is Kia’s new Kappa 1.6 GDi engine producing a maximum output of 105ps @5700rpm and peak torque of 147Nm at 4,000rpm. This works with a lightweight 1.56kWh lithium ion polymer battery which contributes to a combined maximum output of 141ps.
Other tech treats include ventilated front seats to keep passengers cool in our tropical climate and a wireless charger (picture) for compatible smartphones: No cable? No worries.
4. TROUBLE-FREE TRAVELS
The Niro is packed with advanced features to protect occupants and other road users. Its seven-airbag system helps protect occupants in the event of a collision. It has driver and front passenger airbags, two front-side airbags, two side-curtain airbags and a driver’s knee airbag fitted as standard.
The Blind Spot Detection system (picture) keeps a watchful eye on the areas a driver is unable to see. It uses sensors to monitor the car’s sides and rear, giving visual alerts if other vehicles are in the car’s blind spot.
Rear cross-traffic alert reduces the risk of an accident when you’re reversing by giving a warning if it detects any cross traffic in the lane the car is entering.
5. QUALITY IS KEY
Technology goes a long way towards keeping drivers and road users safe, but reliability is the cornerstone of a worry-free ownership experience. The good news is, the Kia Niro delivers on this front as well.
The Niro topped the small SUV segment in the J.D. Power 2017 Initial Quality Study in the US. This study tracks problems new vehicle owners experience during their first 90 days of ownership. A vehicle’s initial quality is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles – the lower the score, the higher the quality.
Kia was also ranked the highest in overall initial quality for the second consecutive year, with its models logging 72 problems per 100 vehicles in this year’s ranking.
Last month, 40 Kia Niro owners in Singapore put the car's reliability, build quality and green credentials to the test when they participated in a series of eco-themed activities at the Kia Niro Eco-Warrior Challenge.
