Measures in place to reduce water wastage in public toilets

PUB, the national water agency, thanks Ms Shirley Swee and Ms Tan Lee Noi for their letters “Allow auto-flush system in toilets for disabled only” (March 7) and “Automated toilet flushes contribute to water wastage” (March 14), and is heartened by their interest in the importance of water conservation.

PUB has followed up with Ms Swee and Ms Tan on the details pertaining their experience and investigated the matter with the relevant building management.

To safeguard public health, public toilets are required to be fitted with sensor-operated flush valves for hygiene reasons. This requirement for public toilets is stated in the Code of Practice for Environmental Health by the National Environment Agency (NEA).

All sensor flush valves must meet the requirements specified by PUB to ensure their proper operation before they can be sold or installed. Flushing shall only be activated after the user moves out of the sensing distance.

Building managements are required to carry out regular maintenance to ensure that the sensor for flush valves continue to perform properly, so that unwanted and multiple flushing do not occur. They are also encouraged to display contact numbers of the building maintenance in the public toilets.

This will help the public to report any faulty fittings for immediate rectification to minimise water wastage.

PUB conducts spot checks on water fittings installed at public toilets and will advise building owners if fittings are not maintained properly. If they fail to comply, enforcement action will be taken.
